暖炉と煙道をつくる Making the Fireplace and Chimney Flue
古いコテージには大きな暖炉があります。煙が煙突へと上っていくための煙道が壁の中に隠れているのではなく、家の外や中にどーん！ と突き出ていたりします。もともとは暖炉がかまどを兼ねていたりして、そこで煮炊きしていたりしたんですよね（数百年前の話）。そういう時代から残っている暖炉を作ってみました。
Old cottages have large fireplaces. The chimney flue, through which smoke rises to the chimney, is not hidden inside the wall but often protrudes prominently outside or inside the house. Originally, the fireplace also served as a stove, and people used to cook there (hundreds of years ago). I tried to make a fireplace that remains from such an era.
ちょっとやり過ぎかも？ と思うくらい大きな煙道をつくって、向かって左側の壁に貼りつけました。ここはあまりよくなかったところで、作業のことを考えると貼りつけるのはあとからにしたほうがよかったです。煙突の位置も決めたかったので貼っちゃったんですよね……。
I made a chimney flue so big that I thought I might have overdone it, and attached it to the wall on the left side. This was not a very good move; considering the work process, it would have been better to attach it later. I pasted it on because I wanted to decide the position of the chimney as well…
貼ってからまず1階の暖炉の開口部をつくります。
時系列的には後日になるのですが、2階の高さを決めてから2回の暖炉も空けました。
After attaching it, I first created the opening for the fireplace on the first floor. Although chronologically it happened later, I also cut open the fireplace for the second floor after deciding the height of the second floor.
開口部にはこれまでと同様茶色い紙を貼っておきます。
I pasted brown paper over the opening, just as I did before.
石組み風に紙を貼る Applying Paper to Look Like Stonework
暖炉は石造りにします。そこで、まずは実験をしました。
I will make the fireplace look like it is made of stone. So, I did an experiment first.
実験結果。よさそうだったのでこの方針でつくりました。まず、お菓子の空き箱など、いらなくなった厚紙をちょきちょき適当な多角形に切っていきます。
Experiment results: It looked good, so I proceeded with this method. First, I snip unnecessary thick paper (cardboard), such as empty snack boxes, into random polygons.

続いて切った紙を木工用ボンドで貼っていきます。角の部分をどう貼るかが悩ましいのですが、厚紙を折って貼ってみたり、切ってから貼ったり、似たような長さのものをぴったり貼り合わせたりといろいろ試してみました。「石」（厚紙）同士の感覚はもっと狭くてもいいと思います。見た目だけの問題なので、本番前に段ボールの切れ端で試してみて、好きな感じのものを見つけるといいと思います。
ちなみに写真ではドールハウスの内壁が塗装済みになっていますが、こちらの工程はあと回しで大丈夫です。また別のエントリで解説しますね。
Next, I paste the cut paper using wood glue. I struggled with how to paste the corners, but I tried various methods, such as folding the thick paper and pasting it, cutting it before pasting, or pasting pieces of similar length closely together. I think the gaps between the “stones” (thick paper) could be narrower. Since it is just a matter of appearance, I recommend testing it on a scrap of cardboard before the real thing to find a look you like.
By the way, in the photo, the inner walls of the dollhouse are already painted, but this step can be saved for later. I will explain that in another entry.
石を貼り終わったら、全面に木工用ボンドを塗ります！ けっこう量を使います。木工用ボンドはほんとにたくさん使うので、もし可能だったら大きいサイズのものを買っておいてください。わたしは今500グラム入りのものを使っています。（以下楽天リンクはアフィリエイトです）
全面に塗ったら（ちなみに塗りこめるのには指を使うのが一番便利です）完全に乾くまで放置します。丸一日はかかります。
Once I finished pasting the stones, I coated the entire surface with wood glue! You use quite a large amount. You really use a lot of wood glue, so if possible, please buy a large size. I am currently using a 500-gram bottle. After coating the whole surface (by the way, using your finger is the most convenient way to spread it), leave it until it is completely dry. It takes a full day.
乾いた後の写真がありませんでした。木工用ボンドは乾くとほぼ透明になるので、乾いたかどうかは簡単に判断できます。乾いたらまず茶色っぽく塗っていきます。
I didn’t have a photo after it dried. Wood glue becomes almost transparent when dry, so it is easy to tell if it has dried. Once dry, I start by painting it a brownish color.
わたしはアクリルガッシュ（不透明なアクリル絵の具）の茶色・緑・黒・白を適当に混ぜ、使い捨てのメイク用スポンジでぽんぽん叩いて塗りました。叩いて塗ることのメリットは筆の跡が残らないことです。適当なものがなければ、普通に絵筆を使ってもよいと思います。アクリル絵の具は乾くと水で落ちなくなるので、ちゃんと筆を洗うのだけお忘れなく！
I mixed brown, green, black, and white acrylic gouache (opaque acrylic paint) randomly and applied it by dabbing it on with a disposable makeup sponge. The advantage of dabbing is that it doesn’t leave brush strokes. If you don’t have a suitable sponge, I think it’s fine to use a regular paintbrush. Acrylic paint becomes waterproof once dry, so don’t forget to wash your brushes properly!
ちなみに、わたしはぺんてるのアクリルガッシュセットを何となく持っているので使っています。アクリル絵の具自体は100円ショップでも売っていますので、使う色だけ買うのもありですね。
By the way, I use a Pentel acrylic gouache set just because I happen to have it. Acrylic paints are also sold at 100-yen shops, so buying only the colors you use is also an option.
まずは一度茶系で塗り終わったところ。ムラが出ますが、それこそが意図したことです。数百年経った煙道なんてススで汚れているのに決まっていますから。
さて、煙道を壁に貼りつけたのが失敗だったと書きましたが、ご覧になっておわかりかと思います。茶色の絵の具が壁にべったりついてしまいました。それだけでなく、壁際がすごく塗りにくくもなってしまったので、煙道は別に作ってあとから貼りつけるほうがいいと思います。
This is after finishing the first coat of brown. It looks uneven, but that is exactly what I intended. A chimney flue that is hundreds of years old is bound to be dirty with soot.
Now, I wrote that pasting the flue to the wall was a mistake, and I think you can see why. The brown paint got smeared all over the wall. Not only that, but it became very difficult to paint near the wall, so I think it is better to make the flue separately and attach it later.
茶色が乾いたら、次は白と黒をメインにグレーぽい色をつくって、またスポンジでたたき込んでいきます。ムラの出し方はお好みで！
Once the brown is dry, next I make a grayish color using mainly white and black, and dab it on with the sponge again. Adjust the unevenness to your liking!
最後に1階部分だけ白を重ねました。この白は普通のアクリル絵の具ではなく、「ジェッソ」というアクリル絵の具用の下地剤を使っています。白はとにかくよく使うので、ジェッソは買っとくといいと思います（結果的にそのほうが割安な気もするので）。
小学生のころに読んでいたドールハウス本ではだいたい皆さんリキテックスのジェッソを使っていたので、とりあえず最近もリキテックスを買っていました。ただ先日ターナーのジェッソのほうが安いことに気づいたので、今年はターナーを使っていく予定です。どのくらい違いが出るのか楽しみです。
Finally, I layered white only on the first floor part. For this white, I am not using regular acrylic paint but a primer for acrylic paint called “Gesso“. You use white a lot anyway, so I think it’s good to buy Gesso (I feel it ends up being cheaper that way, too). In the dollhouse books I read when I was in elementary school, almost everyone used Liquitex Gesso, so I had been buying Liquitex recently as well. However, I noticed the other day that Turner’s Gesso is cheaper, so I plan to use Turner this year. I am looking forward to seeing how much of a difference there is.
煙突を作る Making the Chimney
煙道ができたら煙突を作ります。 Once the flue is done, I make the chimney.

たたみます。こういう貼り合わせにはグルーガンが便利です。
A hot glue gun is convenient for this kind of pasting.
煙道にジャストフィットサイズ。今回は煙突が外壁からちょっと出ているデザインにしたので（煙突にもいろいろな形があるのでお好みでどうぞ）、外壁に煙突に隠れる部分の線をペンで書いておきます。これはあとで外壁を加工していくときに煙突の部分まで間違って作業してしまわないためです。
It fits the flue perfectly. This time, I chose a design where the chimney sticks out a little from the outer wall (there are various shapes of chimneys, so please choose as you like), so I marked the lines on the outer wall where it will be hidden by the chimney with a pen. This is to prevent me from mistakenly working on the chimney area when processing the outer wall later.
煙突は少し煙道と違う感じにしてみようと思い、茶色い紙をちぎって貼っていきます。
I wanted the chimney to have a slightly different feel from the flue, so I tore brown paper and pasted it on.
ぺたぺた……。

貼りおわりました。

塗装は煙道と似た感じで、ただしもっとすすけた雰囲気で。白っぽいのは鳥のフンのイメージ。煙突といえば小鳥に巣をかけられる印象があります。
The painting is similar to the flue, but with a sootier atmosphere. The whitish parts are meant to look like bird droppings. I have an impression that small birds often build nests on chimneys.
暖炉の内部をつくる Making the Fireplace Interior
続いては1階暖炉の内部をつくっていきます。直接火を燃やす場所なので、耐火性のれんがなどでできていることが多いです。
Next, I will make the interior of the first-floor fireplace. Since it is a place where fire burns directly, it is often made of fireproof bricks or similar materials.
食品トレーの底の部分（平らなところのみ）を切り出します。お肉や魚が入っているものはにおいがとれないのでわたしは使いません。このへんは気になるかどうかだと思うのでお好みでどうぞ。
I cut out the bottom part (only the flat part) of a Styrofoam food tray. I don’t use ones that contained meat or fish because the smell doesn’t come off. I think this depends on whether you mind it or not, so please do as you like.
目打ちなど、先のとがったものでれんが模様を刻んでいきます。目打ちがなければ竹串なども使えます。
I carve a brick pattern using a pointed tool like an awl. If you don’t have an awl, you can use a bamboo skewer.
目打ちよりも少し太いもので隙間をより空けていきます。裏に貫通させないようにだけ気をつけてください。わたしは毛糸のとじ針を使っていますが、インクの出なくなったボールペンなども使えると思います。れんが同士の隙間だけでなく、表面にも傷をつけるとよりそれっぽい雰囲気になります。
I widen the gaps with something slightly thicker than an awl. Just be careful not to pierce through to the back. I am using a yarn needle for binding yarn, but I think a ballpoint pen that has run out of ink would also work. If you scratch the surface as well as the gaps between the bricks, it will look more realistic.
スチロールトレーの平らな部分は意外とそんなに大きくないので、何枚か必要になると思います。必要な面積が揃ったら切って、まずは床に敷いてから、
The flat part of a Styrofoam tray is surprisingly not that big, so I think you will need several of them. Once you have the necessary area, cut them out, lay them on the floor first,
次に壁面側を用意。マスキングテープなどで仮止めします。
and then prepare the wall sides. Temporarily fix them with masking tape or similar. It looks like this when placed.
置いてみるとこんな感じになります。わたしは接着にグルーガンを使いました。
I used a hot glue gun for adhesion.
そしたらまたスチロールトレー全面にボンドを塗ります！ 写真がないのですが、煙道と同じノリで。
Then, coat the entire Styrofoam tray surface with glue again! I don’t have a photo, but do it in the same spirit as the flue.
ボンドが乾いたら絵筆でジェッソを塗ります。とりあえずこれでいったん暖炉は完成。またあとでススっぽく汚したりするつもりです。2階の暖炉は内装のイメージが固まってから手を付けます！
Once the glue is dry, apply Gesso with a paintbrush. For now, the fireplace is complete. I intend to dirty it up to look sooty later. The second-floor fireplace will be started after the interior design concept is solidified!
