コッツウォルズ風・石造り風・身近な素材の外壁を作っていきます。とりあえず粘土とアクリル絵の具を買い込みます。
I will make the exterior wall using accessible materials to look like a Cotswolds-style stone wall. For now, I’ll buy a stock of clay and acrylic paints.
軽量粘土 Lightweight clay
粘土のイメージは世代によって違うかもしれないので、一応ご説明を。現在100円ショップや文具店、ホームセンターなどで昔の「紙粘土」的な扱いで主に売られているのは軽量粘土だと思います。昔の紙粘土は本当に紙の繊維が入っていて重かったですが、現在の軽量粘土はふわふわしていてとても軽いです。中身は微小中空樹脂なんだそうで、それだけ聞くと樹脂粘土かな？ と思ってしまいます。が、いわゆる樹脂粘土とはまた組成が違うんだそう。
The image of “clay” might differ by generation, so let me explain. What is sold at 100-yen shops, stationers, and home centers these days as the successor to “paper clay” is mostly “lightweight clay.” Old paper clay had real paper fibers and was heavy, but modern lightweight clay is fluffy and very light. It apparently contains microscopic hollow resin, which sounds like resin clay, but the composition is different from so-called resin clay.
今回外壁にはこの軽量粘土を使います。どのくらい使ったかというと、多分税抜き1,000円分くらいです。
I will use this lightweight clay for the exterior walls. As for how much I used, it was probably about 1,000 yen worth (excluding tax).
なぜ金額で書くか？といいますと、どこで買ってもグラムあたりの値段があまり変わらなかったからです。100円ショップだとだいたいどこでも50gで110円くらい。ホームセンターだと100gで210円くらいでした。例外がひとつあって、ダイソーでは150g入りのものが220円で販売されていました。なので、コスパでいうとダイソーの200円のが一番優秀です。でもほかはだいたいどこも同じくらい。（本ブログの楽天リンクはアフィリエイトです）
Why write the amount in money? Because the price per gram didn’t change much wherever I bought it. At 100-yen shops, it’s usually about 110 yen for 50g. At home centers, it was about 210 yen for 100g. There was one exception: Daiso sold a 150g pack for 220 yen. So, in terms of cost performance, Daiso’s 200-yen one is the best. But the others are all about the same. (The Rakuten links in this blog are affiliate links).
ちなみにこれは低価格帯の軽量粘土の話で、高価格帯は上を見るとキリがないです。パジコのハーティとか、CECの天使のねんどとか。これらもせっかくだし買ってみたのですが、外壁では使わなかったので別のところでご紹介しますね。
By the way, this is about low-priced lightweight clay; if you look at high-end ones, there’s no limit. Padico’s Hearty or CEC’s Angel Clay, for example. I bought these since I had the chance, but I didn’t use them for the outer walls, so I will introduce them elsewhere.
外壁用ブロックをつくる Making blocks for the exterior wall
こんな感じの「石」風外壁用ブロックをつくっていきます。コッツウォルズのコテージはもっといろいろなサイズの石を積み上げてつくっているものが多いのですが、今回は手順を簡単にするために全部同じサイズのブロックにしました。外見がやや単調になってしまうのは否めないですが、始めてだし、ということにしておきます。
I will make “stone” style blocks like this. Cotswolds cottages are often made by piling up stones of various sizes, but this time, to simplify the procedure, I decided to make them all the same size “blocks.” It’s undeniable that the appearance becomes a bit monotonous, but since it’s my first time, let’s just go with this.
アクリル絵の具を少量混ぜます。黄色をメインに、茶色・黒あたりを濃淡をつけて混ぜます。自然石には色のばらつきがありますから、粘土もそうなるように使用する分を一度に全部着色せず、ばらつきを出します。
Mix a small amount of acrylic paint. Use yellow as the main color, and mix in brown and black with varying shades. Natural stones have color variations, so don’t color all the clay you use at once; instead, bring out variations in the clay as well.
着色した粘土（下）に適宜無着色の白い粘土を混ぜます（上）。ちょっと混ぜて伸ばすとマーブル模様になります。
Mix uncolored white clay (top) into the colored clay (bottom) as needed. If you mix it briefly and roll it out, it becomes a marble pattern.
適当な厚みまで伸ばします。わたしはダイソーに売っている粘土棒を使っています。粘土の両脇にあるのは暖炉で使ったスチロールトレイの残り物。スチロールトレイくらいの厚さにするためにガイド代わりにしています。そのまま置くだけだとすぐに動いてしまうので、両面テープの弱粘着タイプで粘土板に仮止めしています。
Roll it out to an appropriate thickness. I use a clay roller sold at Daiso. On both sides of the clay are leftovers of the styrofoam trays I used for the fireplace. I use them as guides to keep the thickness the same as the styrofoam trays. If I just place them there, they move immediately, so I temporarily fix them to the clay board with weak adhesive double-sided tape.
柔らかいうちに、お好みのサイズ感に切ります。わたしは3cm×5cmにしました。わたしはあまり切り口を直線的にしすぎたくなかったので、長い定規で筋を入れて乾燥させました。乾燥後に折り曲げると簡単に割れます（板チョコみたいな感じ）。気にならなければ粘土べらなどで切ってもいいです。
While it is still soft, cut it to your preferred size. I went with 3cm x 5cm. I didn’t want the cut edges to be too straight, so I made indentations with a long ruler and let it dry. When you bend it after drying, it snaps easily (like a chocolate bar). If you don’t mind straight edges, you can cut it with a clay spatula.
乾燥には24時間以上必要です。とにかくこのブロックをつくるのに時間がかかるので、最初からイメージが固まっているなら本体作りや暖炉と同時並行で進めておくといいかもしれません。
It needs more than 24 hours to dry. Anyway, making these blocks takes time, so if your image is fixed from the start, it might be good to proceed in parallel with making the main body or the fireplace.
これをとにかくたくさんつくります。とにかくたくさんたくさん。今回のドールハウスでは200個以上使ったと思います。税抜き1,000円分の軽量粘土とは、まあそういうことです。
Make tons of these. Just tons and tons. I think I used over 200 pieces for this dollhouse. 1,000 yen worth of lightweight clay means exactly that.
粘土をのばして切って、としていると、半端な大きさのブロックがたくさんできてしまうと思います。が、それらもあとで使えるので取っておいてください。
If you roll out and cut the clay, you will likely end up with many odd-sized blocks. However, you can use those later, so please keep them.
色を混ぜ終わった粘土。1回分よりあまった粘土はファスナーが締まるビニール袋に入れ、一緒に湿らせたキッチンペーパーも入れておくと長持ちします。
The clay that has been colored. If you have leftover clay from one session, put it in a sealable plastic bag with a wet paper towel, and it will last longer.
本番前の実験（「モルタル」をつくる） Experiment before the real thing (making “mortar”)
今回も実験をします。ある程度枚数が貯まったら適当なサイズの段ボールに貼っていきます。
Once you have accumulated a certain number of blocks, stick them onto a piece of cardboard of an appropriate size.
貼っただけだと隙間がたくさんあります。これを埋めていきます。本物の石壁ならモルタルやしっくいなどを使いますが、今回は「モルタルもどき」を軽量粘土でつくります。
There are many gaps just by sticking them on. We will fill these in. For a real stone wall, you would use mortar or plaster, but this time we will make “faux mortar” using lightweight clay.
軽量粘土に着色したものに水をちょっと、木工用ボンドもちょっと入れて、ひたすら混ぜます。
Add a little water and a little wood glue to the colored lightweight clay, and mix earnestly.
できあがったどろどろ（モルタルもどき）をブロックの隙間に塗っていきます。
Apply the resulting sludge (faux mortar) into the gaps between the blocks.
よぶんなどろどろを拭いたところ。上2列に「モルタル」を使い、下3列には何もしていません。見た目の違いがおわかりになると思います。
This is after wiping off the excess sludge. I used “mortar” on the top two rows, and did nothing to the bottom three rows. I hope you can tell the difference in appearance.

ブロックを外壁に貼る Sticking blocks to the exterior wall
閑話休題。ブロックを外壁に貼っていきます。まず、外壁に目安となるガイド線を引きます。
Back to the main topic. I will stick the blocks to the exterior wall. First, draw guide lines on the exterior wall.
この線に沿って貼っていきます。
Stick them along these lines.
ブロックを貼るためには両面テープの強力タイプとグルーガンを両方試しました。結果はグルーガンの圧勝。ブロックがきれいに平らになっていたら木工用ボンドでもよいと思うのですが、乾燥させている間に反ってしまったりするので少し貼りづらいです。すぐに冷えて固まってくれるグルーガンが一番使いやすかったです。
To stick the blocks, I tried both strong double-sided tape and a glue gun. The result was a landslide victory for the glue gun. If the blocks were perfectly flat, wood glue might work, but they warp while drying, so they are difficult to stick. The glue gun, which cools and hardens immediately, was the easiest to use.
そんなわけで淡々と貼っていきます。中途半端なサイズのものは窓など、イレギュラーなサイズが必要になるところで活躍します。
So, I will just keep sticking them on. The odd-sized ones are useful in places where irregular sizes are needed, such as windows.
角は折り曲げて貼ってみたり。この場所で粘土の種類による違いを発見することになりました。先ほど「コスパが一番よい」と書いたダイソーの220円（150g）粘土は、このように折って貼ろうとすると割れます。一番弾性があったのがホームセンターで買った粘土で、こちらは少しほかの粘土より紙っぽいというか、繊維っぽい質感がありました。おもしろいですねー。
Try folding them at the corners. At this point, I discovered a difference depending on the type of clay. The Daiso 220-yen (150g) clay, which I wrote earlier had the “best cost performance,” cracks when I try to fold and stick it like this. The one that had elasticity was the clay I bought at the home center, and this one had a slightly more paper-like, or fibrous, texture. Interesting.
この写真の角っこ一番上できれいに割れているのがダイソー220円粘土です。
The one cracking cleanly at the very top corner in this photo is the Daiso 220-yen clay.
貼り終わったらまた「モルタル」をつくり、隙間を埋めていきます。先ほどの割れてしまったところなども塗りこめます。
Once you finish sticking them, make “mortar” again and fill the gaps. You can also fill in the places that cracked earlier.
埋め終わったところ。かなりいい感じの外壁になりました！ 100円ショップで買える粘土でつくったにしては上出来といっていいと思います。
Here is where I finished filling them. It became a pretty nice-looking exterior wall! I think we can say it’s a job well done for something made with clay bought at a 100-yen shop.
しかし困ったことがひとつ起こりました。何かというと、「モルタル」の水分で外壁の段ボールが反ってしまったのです。まだ内壁には何もしていないので、塗装をするとその水分で元に戻るかもしれません。戻らないかもしれません。さあどうしようかな、というところでまた次回です。
However, one problem occurred. What happened is that the moisture from the “mortar” caused the cardboard of the exterior wall to warp. I haven’t done anything to the inner wall yet, so if I paint it, the moisture might bring it back. It might not. Well, what should I do? See you next time.
